320 students from 45 countries are attending what is called “Space Camp” this week.
For one student from Spokane, it’s her second time at the event.
The Honeywell Leadership Challenge program is being held at the US Space and Rocket center in Huntsville Alabama
It’s the second time Grace Kim, a senior from Central Valley high school, has attended. Grace says the event is opportunity for students to work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, also known as “STEM”.
At the Space Center last year, Grace had the opportunity to see first-hand numerous displays including a space shuttle, various historic launch vehicles and items from the race to the moon. In addition, she also met with astronauts.
She says the Space Camp opportunity has led to her expanding her considerations of where to continue her college education. Grace says, “As I plan to transfer my general education through my associates degree, I’ve been applying to universities that also offer space aviation and engineering, and my main interest, bioengineering.”
Grace was chosen as an ‘Ambassador’ participant, which is a space camp alum selected to return to camp for a second time as a result of the student’s leadership and success in the program in the previous year, and their continued academic achievement and community leadership at home.
