From the Studio: Andrew Unsworth, Organist of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

If you had to imagine your dream job, what would it be? Playing football in the NFL? Running your own company? Singing on Broadway?  Whatever it is - call it to mind.  Now, imagine you got that dream job.

Pretty cool, right? In the relatively small world of professional organists, the dream for many is to play with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  Why is this job so coveted?  There are only three full-time organist positions at the Tabernacle, so to win that job is pretty spectacular.  Think about being the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and you'll get a sense of the magnitude of the position.

One of these three organists, Andrew Unsworth, came to Spokane to play a concert at St. John's Cathedral this weekend.  As a full-time musician, Unsworth not only plays for services, but he also plays one to two recitals a week and is expected to tour with the choir, all while also composing and arranging music.  Unsworth took time on his weekend off (which is rare among organists if you think about it - to be so lucky as to have a Sunday not at the organ is a pretty good gig) to not only play this upcoming concert, but also to come talk with Verne at the station today about his career and experiences.

Andrew Unsworth's concert on Sunday is co-sponsored by the Spokane Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and will take place at St. John's Cathedral at 4:00pm.  Admission is free, though a donation is requested.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
