Symphony Week 2016: Cellist Josh Roman and Violinist Ilya Kaler

Today was the final day of Symphony Week 2016.  We had a couple of friends from the Spokane Symphony
Associates with the new Executive Director Jeff vom Saal to talk with Verne about their relationship with the symphony.  Also, we had cellist Joshua Roman on the phone to talk about his upcoming appearance on Classics 6 later in the Spokane Symphony's season.  To finish off the week, guest soloist for this weekend's opening concerts, violinist Ilya Kaler, played some music for us as a preview of his performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Spokane Symphony.

Symphony Week 2016 is a week-long series of feature interviews with various staff, musicians, and listeners of the Spokane Symphony leading up to their season opener, which happens this weekend, September 17-18 at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
