Reading of the Declaration of Independence during Morning Edition Segment (program airs twice between 5-9a 
On this date in 1776, church bells rang out over Philadelphia as the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. NPR continues a tradition of reading that revolutionary document, articulating the ideals of human equality and self-determination that still serve as the guiding principles of American government.

11 a.m. Hamilton: A Story of US

In New York City this spring, thousands of students from underserved neighborhoods saw Hamilton as part of an innovative American history curriculum. NPR's Audie Cornish hosts a special that follows some of these students before they see the hit Broadway show, post-performance meetings with writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a mix of recordings from the show. The result engages diverse voices to the story and questions of a democratic republic.

Noon, Capitol Steps, Politics Takes a Holiday

This Independence Day, celebrate our country by helping the Capitol Steps make fun of it!  Clap your "big" hands as the comedy troupe from the "other" Washington take on The Donald, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and all the other newsmakers in this hour-long special. With this much material to work with, this special will be HUGE!

America's national Independence Day celebration broadcasts live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol. NPR's Korva Coleman and TV personality Tom Bergeron host performances from some of America's best known celebrities and musical artists including Smokey Robinson, Kenny Loggins, Amber Riley, Sutton Foster, the cast of Gloria Estefan's On Your Fee, and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly.

10 p.m. B.B.’s Blues: A B.B. King Appreciation
A music-intensive program of B.B. King performances, celebrating his long-standing role as the unassailable "King of The Blues." Award-winning music documentary producer Paul Ingles hosts.
